Loren Albin, 50 8:49:00 Baz Hawley always presents a bit of magic to those folks making the trek to beautiful downtown Fish Camp, California for the Shadow of the Giants. For the past several years Baz has been promising to move away - way away - Down Under. Despite the best of intentions, and despite the urging of this many friends who have sent petitions to the INS calling for his deportation, Baz is still around. Maybe next year we can get rid of him! Last year's race was billed as "The Last Shadow". This year, it was billed as "One More Last Time". Baz is already talking up next year's race (first Saturday in June, as always). I guess that will then be the "Third Annual Last Shadow". Frank Bozanich, at age 58, won the race outright. Frank, who set many records as long as 20 years back, is still a stud. After the race he said that he "wanted to show the young guys something." I guess he did! Maria Gallardo won the women's race for the second straight year, finishing comfortably ahead of the rapidly-improving Lynn Schankliess. Older runners must've been inspired by Bozanich's run as they posted most of the notable times. Helen Klein, at age 79, was the oldest finisher, slowed only by running into a tree and sustaining a nasty gash on her scalp, which later required a dozen stitches. Kent Holder won the 60+ division with a very strong effort and Patty Giebel was third woman overall at age 55. The race course, just a mile south of the Wawona entrance to Yosemite National Park, is a spectacular journey through heavily wooded terrain, highlighted by a mile-long loop through the Nelder Grove, a stand of 2000-year-old giant sequoias. These huge trees, 300 feet tall and often 20 feet in diameter, have to be seen to be believed. They alone are worth the trip; the down home fun of this low-key event is a perfect complement to the magnificent scenery. "Magic" is Baz's favorite word, but there can be little doubt that it is the perfect qualifier for this event. From: John Medinger Date: Fri, 7 Jun 2002 09:45:00 -0700 (PDT)
