In 2000 Mark & I decided to put on a low-key 50K run on the Sumallo forest service roads up near his cabin in Sunshine Valley. Located about 2 hours east of Vancouver in the Cascade Mountains the area behind Sunshine Valley is a hidden delight of majestic mountain scenery including the 7000ft + summits of Silvertip & Forddred. All of this is hidden from the highway tourist blasting up Hwy. 3 for Manning Park and points beyond. Back then (last year) we just got a few other friends to help us put it on and invited a bunch of local ultra-trail types to test out the course for us. Well they all seemed to like it so we decided to open it up for this year to anyone who wanted to join in. We decided that 50 runners was about what we were willing to deal with and set our limit at that with a two weeks before race cut off. In the meantime I was asked by Insport Canada , the Canadian distributor for Montrail, what they could do to promote trailrunning in B.C.. This led to the creation of B.C. Ultra Trailrunning Series which consists of six trail ultras. As it turned out Silvertip (purely by coincidence of course!) became the final race of the Montrail BCUT Series. The fact that there were six pairs of shoes on the line seems to have stirred some interest as at one point we thought we’d end up with 75 runners. By race day we still had 63 runners on the books but the usual attrition rate got us down to a manageable 51.Included among the field were some of B.C’s best ultrarunners and more than a few local legends and ultra race directors. The weather cooperated fully as the day dawned bright and cool for the 9:00am start. After going with Plan B (write it on your hand) for race numbers because the RD forgot to buy pins the participants were off right on time. The course at Silvertip is a three-pronged out-and-back affair that takes the runners into three high alpine valleys. With most of the climbing in the second half of the 50K the 25K is a great introduction to longer trail events. Eighteen runners took advantage of this and we had new course records set by Marie Boucher and Paul Pierbon. The 50K men’s race looked to be a tight battle between 2000 defending champ Matt Sessions, top local master Ean Jackson and the up-and-coming Michael Wardas. After his stellar 20:15 at Western States earlier in the summer Matt had enough left to take control of this race at the halfway point and set a new course record of 4:35:04 bettering his time of a year ago by over 22 minutes. In typical style Ean was in hard pursuit over the last miles and also finished under the old course record. Michael Wardas took third and thus became only the third person to break the five-hour mark. Ron Adams, in the 50+ division, completed the course record sweep with his 8th place finish in 5:24:36. The woman’s race was also a close tussle between Tammy Vincent, Anne Taylor and 2000 winner Gail Bazeley. Tammy led from start to finish but was hard pressed at the end by a surging Anne who finished less than five minutes behind. Both set course records – Tammy the Overall Woman’s and Anne the 40+ Woman’s. Not to be outdone the amazing Gail Bazeley lowered her time, and 50+ CR, by nearly 27 minutes to finish third and make it a woman’s sub 5:30 trio. The best part of the day for the RD’s was the 100% finisher rate. We wanted to claim a finisher rate of 102% (50 starters and 51 finishers) since one runner told us to cross her off the start list as she was only going to the Aid Station #1 at 7km and then turning around. She eventually changed her mind and completed the 25K. Must have been the scenery! This year we decided to have the runners add to the post race celebration by contributing a favorite dish. The race provided chili and beverages while the Sunshine Valley Community Assoc. cooked up delicious hot dogs. The end result was a true feast which all enjoyed. Thanks to the volunteers, the Sunshine Valley Community Association, Montrail and all the runners who made this event possible. Rob Lang rlang@direct.ca rlang00@hotmail.com
