Erland Jensen, 60 8:17:25 195 starters, 85.1% ************************************************ Here are results from the 19th annual Quadruple Dipsea, held on Saturday, November 24, 2001. The weather was wild and varied. After a pre-race night of heavy rain and winds of 50 mph (with gusts to 80 mph), the rain mercifully subsided about 30 minutes before the start. The rest of the day was partly to mostly cloudy, with occasional sunshine and three short (but intense) cloudbursts, which included lightning and hail. Temperatures were mild - in the low 60s for the most part, cooling off later in the day to upper 40s. Carl Andersen continued his mastery of the course. In the 19-year history of the race, only Carl has broken 4 hours -- and now he has done it three times. Given the conditions (high winds and mud) this is probably the most impressive of his three stellar races here. His 25-minute margin of victory had the other competitors in awe. Luanne Park was the women's winner, beating out two-time defending champion Jeri Howland, who was second. Most runners were slowed by the mud and the weather. And 25% of the entrants decided to not brave the elements and didn't even make it to the starting line. All in all, the weather wasn't that bad. Given how it looked three hours before the start, there is little doubt that we dodged a major bullet! Aloha, Tropical John, RD 11/25/01
