Pirates Cove 50 Km Sausalito, CA March 23, 2002 Friday's course marking weather was cold, windy, and rainy.and Saturday's forecast was not much better. Rain on Saturday seemed certain - it was only a matter of when and how much. We arrived early on Saturday to set up the aid stations, double check some course markings, and prepare for run day registration. This time there were four runs instead of the usual three - an 8 Km, 20 Km, 30 Km, and 50 Km. I had tied over 1,100 ribbons, and Wendell and Catra Corbett had spent over 8 hours in lousy weather hanging them. The ribbons in the spots Wendell checked very early Saturday morning were still there, so we all met at the start/finish line to set up. As we got the registration tables, canopy, and banner set up, Catra took off to check the markings on the entire course. And THANK GOODNESS she did! She found two sections from which people had intentionally moved ribbons onto trails we weren't using, and if she hadn't checked the courses, people would have ended up down on the beach and up on the ridges - lost and upset. Instead, she fixed these sections before any runners arrived at them. Thank you, Catra! Once again the Bay Area weather forecasters were all wet - and so we were dry. It turned out to be a beautiful day, mostly sunny, cool, and breezy. The day was a real family one, with many 50 Km runners bringing family and friends to run the shorter distances, and then relax and enjoy soup and chili at the finish line while they waited for their runners to come in. Both of the first place finishers, Jason Ham and Jennifer Johnston, brought their favorite crew people with them to enjoy the run. Jason's wife mountain biked parts of the first loop and then ran with Jason on the second. Jennifer was even luckier - she and David Penny didn't even get up on race morning until nearly 7 o'clock! Now that these trails are in their backyard, they were able to sleep in before David came out to run the 8 Km (the only trails that allowed him to take their dog) and then crew for Jenny. This is the third time that Jennifer has won a Pacific Trail Runs 50 Km handily - even our most challenging courses prove to be just nice training runs for her!
