This race, which goes up and over the two ridges of Mt. Tam between Mill Valley and Stinson Beach, CA, at the Pacific coast, four times, is a 28.4 mile super rollercoaster. The weather was great for running. It started out overcast, became sunny and warm, then got overcast and cool again, before the sun once again appeared. Temps were probably between 55 and 65. I was stationed on the top of Cardiac Hill to crew for my friends and Tamalpa teammates, Bruce Mace, Geoff Vaughn and Greg Nacco. Some preliminary, scattered results. Bruce Mace was first in approx. 4:12, a great race for him. Geoff Vaughn, Bruce's good friend and training partner, was second, about 4 minutes back. Had Geoff taken more salt earlier in the race, it might have been even closer. Even so, it was a PR for Geoff, who won the race in 1994. I believe Rick Stuart, from Arizona, was third, about another 7 minutes or so back. I didn't know the guy in fourth, nor did any one else I talked to. Greg Nacco, not even in the top 20 after the first leg, roared back to finish fifth, showing the wisdom of running even splits. Others I saw out there included Tim Twietmeyer, Rick Simonsen, Kevin Purcell, Mark Donaldson, Dana Gard and Errol Jones. On the women's side, Susannah Sandrock, the former triathlete, followed up her impressive second place in the Pt. Reyes 50K with an easy win here. I'm not sure of her time but I would estimate a 4:45 finish. She's still learning and, if she sticks with it, could be someone to reckon with in the future. Jane Baldwin, another triathlete, was second with a time over 5 hours. Regards, John Edgcomb.
