BAY AREA ULTRARUNNERS
The No-name Running Club idea germinated in the summer/fall of 1982, leading
to a January 23, 1983 meeting. First officers were Dick Collins, President,
Bob Vernam, VP, John Buenfil, Treasurer, and Jim Skophammer, Secretary.
A name selection meeting took place on March 31, 1983 causing us to lose
our no-name designation and become the BAY AREA ULTRARUNNERS.
"The objectives of the club are to organize individuals interested
in ultrarunning, to promote ultrarunning activities and events, and to
promote fellowship and provide guidance for individuals interested in long
distance running."
Over the past 28 years BAUR members have pursued this stated intention
with a high degree of energy, enthusiasm and expertise: 1983 races such
as the Regional Park 50 miler (forerunner of Firetrails 50), Double Skyline
50k, and the Quadruple Dipsea, the 1984 Gator 24 hour, Ruth Anderson 100Km.
All of these races set the stage for many years of successful race promotion,
volunteer activities, fellowship, and guidance for the ultrarunner. Current

Unmentioned in early meetings or current literature is our dedication to
the principles of volunteerism. We rely totally on friends, members, and
families as volunteers needed to carry out our club purpose. By seeking
membership in BAUR we hope new members are aware that there is obligation
other than participation in races as a runner.
